The 6th Siyuan Ocean Conference 2024 was held on May 10 -12 2024 at the Xuhui Campus of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). The theme is “Siyuan: Tracing Ocean Processes”, which focused on tracing methodologies in the ocean, and the topics include but are not limited to physical-chemical-biological-geological processes and paleoenvironmental reconstructions of the modern and the ancient ocean.

Chinese Academy of Science Academician Su Jilan from the School of Oceanography of SJTU and Second Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), Chinese Academy of Engineering Academician Lin Zhongqin and National Academy of Science Academician Michael Bender of SJTU, Former First Grade Inspector Qin Weijia of Polar Expedition Office of the State Oceanic Administration (SOA), Li Tiegang, Director of the First Institute of Oceanography of MNR, Li Chaolun, Director of South China Sea Institute of Oceanology,Chinese Academy of Science . and Liu Shunlin, Director Polar Research Institue of China (PRIC), Chen Jianfang, deputy director of the Second Institute of Oceanography ,MNR, Wang Jianxin, vice president of Zhejiang Ocean University, and nearly 200 experts and scholars from more than 20 universities and scientific research institutions attended the meeting.

Siyuan Ocean Conference is a forum for scientists and researchers from the world to communicate scientific ideas and to seek research collaborations on ocean processes and climate change. “Siyuan” means “Think of the Origin” in Chinese and is named after the motto of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). The conference is hosted annually by the School of Oceanography (SOO) at SJTU. The themes of the past five conferences respectively were “Ocean Environment and Climate Interaction”, “Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions Between Mid and High Latitudes and Their Climate Effects”, “Extremes in the Ocean”, “Polar and Deep Oceans: Variability and Stability” and “Siyuan: Four Poles”.
